People from all walks of life, cultures and faiths will gather for the Urban League’s 10th Annual Community Prayer Breakfast on Saturday, December 5, at the First Church of the Open Bible in Lauderdale Lakes. Focusing on the theme of thanksgiving, the Urban League of Broward County invites community, business, educational, religious and political leaders, including state legislators, mayors and other public officials, to convene in the spirit of prayer, peace and unity as they close out their 40th Anniversary year.

Rev. Henry “Trae” Green, III, pastor of Payne Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, West Palm Beach, will be the keynote speaker at the breakfast. And this year the event has been expanded to a weekend of prayer and praise with a free concert on Friday night featuring Jonathan Nelson, the chart-topping singer, songwriter, and worship leader who whose contemporary praise and worship music inspires and encourages people. He continues to bring his message of winning through Christ in his new album, Finish Strong, which captures the message that whatever God has for you to do, you must continue to go after it, never give up and finish strong. It is a universal message that will appeal to a broad audience.

A new generational young pastor, Rev. Green, with the blessings of the entire congregation, is making changes at Payne Chapel that do not eliminate traditions, but enhance those traditions by building on them and keeping them abreast of our changing society in the Twenty-First Century. A community activist, Green is an active member of the Northwest Consortium, Inc. and PEACE. He is a member of the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., and his most recent achievement was being named a 2015 “Gator Great” by the University of Florida (ABA) Association of Black Alumni, South Florida Chapter.

Similar to the annual National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C., the morning will feature nondenominational prayers for the community, for the president and the nation’s economy, military troops, youth and families, and for public officials and business and community leaders. According to Lisa Barker, pillars of faith coordinator for the Urban League, “We are working on growing this event because there are plenty of prayer ministries out there.”  Hosted by the Urban League, this year’s community prayer breakfast is being sponsored by the National Christian Foundation with Cracker Barrel sponsoring breakfast.

Celebrating 40 years of serving the community by breaking the cycle of poverty for tens of thousands of local people, the Urban League of Broward County works with community partners to cut poverty by improving economic stability and uplifting struggling individuals and families by providing them access to life-changing employment, education opportunities, quality housing and health care services.

The free breakfast will be served at 8 a.m. followed by the program from 9 – 11 a.m. Attendees should RSVP for the event which will be held at First Church of the Open Bible, 4767 NW 24th Court, Lauderdale Lakes, by December 1 at www.ulbroward.org/prayer.
